JCSER: 70 Homes Demolished in East Jerusalem Since

January 2007

Israeli bulldozers demolished yesterday morning, 28 July 2007, the third floor of a building that belongs to Talal Hammad Shweiki, a Palestinian Jerusalemite resident of Ein Al-Lozeh in the neighborhood of Silwan in Occupied East Jerusalem, under the pretext that the house lacks a building license. The neighborhood was besieged by large police units & border guards, the building was evacuated from its occupants, citizens were prevented from approaching the building, and the occupants were attacked and beaten up.

'We were surprised by the presence of the Israeli demolition teams without prior notice. They evacuated the building and attacked my 50-year-old father, Talal, a 75-year-old occupant, and all my brothers. My father was taken to hospital for treatment. My sick mother, who suffers from cancer, was also attacked,' said Na'el Shweiki.

The 100-square meter house was built a year and a half ago. Electricity wires and water wells were destroyed.

The West Jerusalem Municipality imposed a 40,000-shekel fine on the first and second floors five years ago for renovating the floors without a permit. .

Mr. Sheikwi called on government organizations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to help the local residents of East Jerusalem whose houses are being demolished by the Israeli occupation authorities.

On the other hand, the Jerusalem Municipality postponed the demolition order issued against Nawal Al-Abbasi, a Palestinian Jerusalemite resident of Silwan, for five days. The client has been living in the house with her seven children for seven years.

Fakhri Abu Diab, member of the Committee for the Protection of Silwan Land & Property, condemned Israel's attack against the houses and lands of Silwan. 'Silwan is targeted by the Jerusalem Municipality, the Interior Ministry, and all Israeli ministries,' he stated.

'The Jerusalem Municipality adopts the policy of house demolition in Silwan where the family whose house has been demolished cannot rebuild the house or build in any other area in the neighborhood,' he added.

He noted that ten houses have been demolished since the beginning of the year. In addition, 2,200 houses are threatened with demolition under the pretext that they lack building license.

Mr. Abu Diab stated that the Committee helps the local residents with the aim of enhancing their steadfastness through raising their awareness and approaching local and international human rights organizations.

According to JCSER's data, over 70 Palestinian houses have been demolished by the Israeli occupation authorities since January 2007.

JCSER Director General said, 'We have noticed an escalation in Israel's attack against Jerusalem and its local residents this year, with the aim of creating a new reality on the ground, and confronting the Palestinian demographic danger. There has been an increase in house demolition, land confiscation, ID card confiscation, tax campaigns and expansion of settlements surrounding the city of Jerusalem.'

'The Israeli government is carrying out large-scale steps on the ground to impose full control over Jerusalem,' he added.
