JCSER: Israel rebukes Palestinians of Jerusalem after UN bid

Print PDF

Jerusalem Center for Social and Economic Rights, JCSER, accused the Israeli government of adopting several measures against the Palestinian population of Jerusalem in what is believed a revenge from the recent political developments which was peaked by President Arafat speech before the UN General Assembly.

Part of the Israeli measures was the abduction of the Palestinian parliamentarian Ahmad Atoun form headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross, in addition to the mounting desecration of al-Aqsa Mosque and the continuous attacks against Moslem worshipers.

JCSER cited also the continuous excavations around the Old City and the approval of constructing thousands of settlement housing units south Jerusalem.

Moreover, Israeli authorities decided to confiscate dozen of Palestinian stores and 34 dunums of land in order to expand the crossing at Shu'fat refugee camp in which some 40000 Palestinians live. This is not to mention the Israeli army decision to evacuate the Bedouins from Wa'r al-Beik in Anata.

JCSER believes that the Israeli government will adopt more punitive measures in response to President Mahmoud Abbas speech, such as demolishing more homes in Silwan, increase the economic pressures on the Palestinian National Authority, resuming incursions in Palestinian territories and giving the settlers the free hand to continue with their assaults and attacks against Palestinian which are conducted under the protection of the Israeli army.

According to the Palestinian human rights activist Ziad al-Hammouri the content of Netanyahu's speech in UN with all of its fabricated stories and allegations had very serious implications in regards to the future trends of his government towards the Palestinians. "Henceforth, Jerusalem is expected to be subjected to an unprecedented campaign of Israelization that will affect all aspects of Palestinian life," he said, and warned of more escalation in the field of deportation and expulsion knowing that the recent circulated reports revealed Israeli schemes to deport hundred of Palestinian activists from Jerusalem. "It seems that arresting member of the Palestinian Legislative Council Ahmad Atoun is the beginning of a new campaign of deportation and expulsion," he concluded.
