JCSER Regards Police & Tax Teams as 'Illegal'

Print PDF

The Israeli police and the West Jerusalem Municipality, in cooperation with the income tax and the national insurance departments, have recently intensified the campaign against Jerusalemite citizens and merchants, as an escalating measure in the city of Jerusalem.

The joint campaign being carried out by the Israeli police in cooperation with the income tax and the national insurance departments at the military checkpoints erected at the entrances of Jerusalem exacerbated the already deteriorating economic situation of Palestinian Jerusalemites, in addition to the restrictions on residents' freedom of movement.

In the report, JCSER noted that the police, the income tax, and the national insurance checkpoints have been turned into ambushes for Jerusalemite merchants where hundreds of merchants suffer from tax requests and seizure measures.

According to JCSER's data, an average of 20 - 30 vehicles are confiscated by the Israeli tax teams, in addition to over 100 traffic violations daily.

According to JCSER, the campaign targets only Jerusalemite-owned vehicles - which is clear from the lines of cars seen daily at the military checkpoints of Hizma, Qalandia, Shu'fat refugee camp, Az-Z'yyem - while Israeli-owned vehicles are not searched or checked.

The report noted that another joint campaign is being carried out by the West Jerusalem Municipality with the Israeli police inside and outside the Old City, such as Al-Musrarah, Salah Elddin, Sultan Suleiman & Az-Zahra.

The report noted that a daily average of 120 - 200 traffic violations is imposed on the vehicle owners in these markets, an average of 250 - 500 shekels.

The traffic arrangements taken by the Jerusalem Municipality & the police over the past two months and determining the parking lots according to the card system forced merchants and citizens to park their cars in remote places, thus increasing their suffering.

According to JCSER's data, millions of shekels are being collected from traffic violations imposed by the Jerusalem Municipality & Israeli police on citizens and merchants. Over the past four months, some 45 million shekels have been collected.

It should be noted that JCSER has recently lodged a case in cooperation with the Citizens' Rights Center and other human rights organizations demanding the removal of the police and income tax checkpoints erected close to the military checkpoints, regarding the work of Israeli teams as 'illegal'.
