JCSER Calls on PNA to Enhance and Activate the Role of Human Rights Organizations Concerned with Defending the Rights of Palestinian Jerusalemites

The Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER) calls on the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to enhance and activate the role of the national institutions and human rights organizations concerned with defending the rights of Palestinian Jerusalemites. JCSER warns that the failure of the PNA to adopt an official, clear plan supporting these institutions will lead to further emigration by these institutions outside the city of Jerusalem.

JCSER referred to the emigration of dozens of Jerusalemite institutions that hold official licenses, even from Israel, outside the borders of Jerusalem and to the main cities in the West Bank, especially Ramallah. The latter has been transformed into a political, media, economic and cultural center.

In this context, JCSER referred to the relocation of labor and media unions outside Jerusalem, and the closure of these unions, due to the financial crisis they have been going through over the past few years and their inability to pay the rents.

In return, JCSER referred to Israel's continued closure of more than 30 Jerusalemite institutions, including the 'Orient House' since the beginning of the Second Intifada in 2000, thus increasing the suffering of citizens and forcing some sectors to approach Israeli institutions, some of which are supported by semiofficial Israeli departments.

JCSER's Director General, emphasized the importance of adopting a national, strategic plan to enhance and activate the role of the remaining institutions in East Jerusalem. He referred to the legal unit's decision to expand its scope of work in regard to following up and handling complaints received by Palestinian Jerusalemites.

He confirmed that the adoption of the activity of Jerusalemite institutions concerned with defending the rights of Palestinian Jerusalemites refers to enhancing the steadfastness of Palestinian Jerusalemites in their city, which is suffering not only from emigration of institutions, but also a demographic emigration to the suburbs of Jerusalem due to the housing crisis and the rise in rents.
