JCSER Calls on Participating Delegations in International Conference to Mobilize Financial Support for Jerusalemite Citizens and Institutions to Maintain the Arab Character of Jerusalem

The Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER) has warned the participating delegations in the international conference on 'Jerusalem', which took place in the Turkish city of Istanbul during 15 - 17 November 2007, of the grave dangers that threaten the Arab Islamic and Christian presence in the city of Jerusalem, as a result of the Israeli Judaization policies and procedures in Jerusalem.

JCSER board member Mr. Naim Ashhab presented a lengthy presentation before the conference, reviewing reports prepared by the legal and media units the Israeli human rights violations against Palestinian Jerusalemites' social and economic rights, especially their rights to housing and residency. He pointed out that Israel has over the past few years, particularly since the beginning of 2007 escalated its policy of house demolition and imposed new punitive measures against Palestinian Jerusalemites accused by the Jerusalem Municipality of violating building laws.

He also presented important data on Israel's policy with regard to revoking East Jerusalem Arab residents' permanent residency status, isolating thousands of Palestinian Jerusalemites in large residential housing compounds outside the municipal boundaries of Jerusalem, escalating tax campaigns against Palestinian Jerusalemites, expanding settlements built Arab lands in East Jerusalem, expanding Israeli excavations in the surroundings and beneath the Al-Aqsa Mosque and inside the Old City, in addition to the excavations in Silwan adjacent to the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

In his presentation, Mr. Ashhab highlighted the fact that Israel has over the past few months succeeded in imposing new facts on the ground in Jerusalem, thus making it impossible to achieve any settlement in the future.

He called on the participating delegations to mobilize financial support to enhance and reinforce the steadfastness of Jerusalemite citizens and institutions concerned with defending the social and economic rights of Palestinian Jerusalemites and their rights to residency. He confirmed that financial support is the only guarantee to maintain the Arab character of Jerusalem and to prevent its Judaization.

JCSER board member Mr. Aref Nasser Elddin and lawyer Samer Suleiman also participated in the conference.
