Israeli Court Approves to Reinstate Health Insurance Retroactively to a Palestinian Jerusalemite

The Israeli Labor Court has recently issued a decision forcing the National Insurance Institute (NII) to reinstate the health and social insurance to Mustafa Idkeidek, a Palestinian Jerusalemite resident of Ras Al-Amud neighborhood of Occupied East Jerusalem, retroactively to 01 January 2007.

Samer Suleiman, a lawyer from the Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER), who followed up the case file, said, 'the client approached the legal unit last year. He lodged a complaint against the NII, which discontinued his health insurance and other benefits, under the pretext that he lives outside the municipal boundaries of Jerusalem during the years 1989 through 1997.'

He added, 'In the wake of the complaint, the Center sent memos to the NII with the aim of reinstating the client's health and social rights. However, the NII turned down the Center's request, despite providing all the necessary papers and documents to prove the client's 'center of life' in Jerusalem. As a result, the legal unit was forced to submit a bill of indictment to the Labor Court against the NII, after which a special session was held. It was followed by a series of sessions, thus forcing the NII to acknowledge the client's health and social insurance.'
