Israeli bulldozers demolish barracks and raze trees in Shamma'a

Print PDF

Bulldozers of the Israeli Interior Ministry and Nature Conservation Authority demolished on Tuesday an iron sheets barracks which was constructed on 600 sq. meters, and uprooted a fence and olive trees belonging to Muntaser Hamdan family which reside in Shamma'a area in Silwan.

The family told JCSER that it leased the land from the Greek Orthodox monastery since 100 years and was planted with olive trees while one dunum of it was used for raising birds. Sarhan family confirmed to JCSER that it never received any warning or court order to evacuate the land.

The land is alleged to be purchased by a Jew in 1900 and it was mortgaged for the monastery. However, after 1967 the monastery claimed that the Jew failed to pay the mortgage. But the Israeli court obtained documents proving the Jewish ownership of the land, and ordered the monastery to pay $200,000 in costs for the court proceedings, but the monastery reached a deal with the court in which it will not appeal against its verdict in exchange for canceling the payment of the costs.
