Jerusalem Municipality in the Process of Demolishing More Houses in the Old City of Jerusalem

JCSER's legal unit has warned of plans prepared by the West Jerusalem Municipality (WJM) to demolish further buildings and additions in different quarters in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The demolition of Zeinab Kabaja's house last week in 'Khan Zeit Market' the Old City is a beginning of a series of imminent demolitions of Palestinian houses located in 'Al-Khaldiyeh', 'As-Sarayah', 'Al-Qarami Quarter', Al-Wad Street' & 'As-Sa'diyeh Quarter'.

These are the most densely populated areas in the Old City where citizens suffer from a severe housing crisis that forced a good number of families to expand their houses by adding small rooms of cement or zinc to provide shelter for the growing number of citizens.

JCSER referred to the Mayor of Jerusalem's intention of fighting Palestinian 'illegal construction' inside the walls of the Old City, under the cover of preserving its architectural and historical feature. The Jerusalem Municipality allocated special budgets to carry out the demolitions in the Old City.

JCSER confirmed that the demolition plan in the Old City does not include dozens of additions built by settlers in some 70 real estates they occupied over the past two decades.

The Center's Director General, said, 'The Jerusalem Municipality is not strict towards building violations committed by the settlers inside the walls of the Old City. It grants the necessary building permits.

Settlement societies made important changes in the real estates it occupied. Specialized teams demolish the internal walls of these buildings, rebuild and design the buildings different from its original building scheme.

It should be noted that the Jerusalem Municipality announced earlier that its specialized teams are studying maps to build dozens of settlement units in 'Burj Al-Laqlaq' adjacent to 'Bab Az-Zahera'. The Center considers it a settlement neighborhood that will be built in the northern part of the Old City overlooking the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the same as with the Jewish neighborhood, which was built on the rubbles of 'As-Shurafa Neighborhood' following the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem in June 1967.

JCSER noted that the construction of the new settlement neighborhood in 'Burj Al-Laqlaq' will double the Jewish demographic presence in the Old City, where some 3,000 live in the Jewish neighborhood, and thousands in 70 settlement nucleuses distributed in the neighborhoods Old City of Jerusalem.
