Israel eyes church properties

Print PDF

According to a study conducted by researchers Itimar Katz and Ruth Krak, Israeli official and private parties are eyeing a takeover of church properties and land of about 100,000 dunams, 5,000 in Jerusalem alone. The researchers said this number of dunams was the amount of land owned by western and eastern churches in the Palestinian territories. According to the study, 60% of the Christian owned lands belong to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, some of which has been leased to Jewish government and private parties. According to the study, the Knesset is built on Church lands as well, having been leased by the church around 60 years ago. Greek Orthodox members have expressed their rejection of the leasing policy to Israeli parties. Now that the leases are about to end, members of the Patriarchate say they are putting pressure on the Church not to renew the leases, saying Arab Christians have more of a right to invest in these lands. Greek Orthodox spokesperson Father Issa Musleh denied any intention of the church to extend the leases, saying there is a decision to freeze all the lease agreements, especially in Jerusalem, adding that the Church was part of the Palestinian national movement and that it refused to heed to Israeli pressures.
