JCSER Condemns Israel's Intervention in PLC Elections in East Jerusalem

Print PDF

The Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER) described the Israeli government's recent decision to allow Palestinian Jerusalemites to participate in the PLC elections, due to take place on 25 January 2006, as 'informal decision' and not concerned about the conditions placed by the Israelis and their attempts to intervene in an offensive manner in the freedom of those who want to participate in the elections.

JCSER regarded the Israeli conditions as a violation of the agreements signed between the Palestinians and Israelis, and an intervention in the Palestinian internal affairs, stressing the Palestinian refusal of such intervention, to help ensure a wide and real participation of Palestinian Jerusalemites in the elections, far from the de facto policy. It also condemned the Israeli government's request to determine the lists of candidates, which means that the elections are threatened to be cancelled and will not be conducted.

JCSER condemned the arrest campaign being launched by the Israeli authorities against PLC candidates and campaign activists, and the raids being launched against the propaganda campaigns' offices, highlighting the fact that the decision to allow Palestinian Jerusalemites to participate in the elections is ineffective, calling on the international observers to intervene to stop such procedures.

JCSER called on Jerusalemite PLC candidates and campaign activists to maintain citizens' private property by fixing posters on their houses and shops. However, violations committed by PLC candidates have created a state of resentment and anger among citizens, who called on the candidates to stop such practices for causing damage and distorting the general view.
