Israel will convert Qalandiya Airport into industrial zone

Israeli occupation authorities intend to convert Jerusalem (Qalandiya) Airport into and industrial zone.

According to a report in Maariv published on Thursday, the municipal building and planning committee in Jerusalem recently registered the land on which the Qalandiya airport is built as state property.

It added, the Israeli transportation minister Yisrael Katz formed a special committee on the airport and has decided to annex the area to the West Jerusalem municipality so it can establish an industrial zone.

The newspaper also said that former Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni promised Prime Minister Salam Fayyad to transfer the airport to the PA so that the latter could establish an international airport there after signing a peace treaty.

In response, PA officials said the move would be in contravention to international law and a clear violation of Palestinian rights. Government spokesman Ghassan Khatib said the airport was located in occupied territory according to international law and that neither Israel nor the occupation municipality in Jerusalem has a right to alter the status quo.

Khatib said, the move was a continuation of Israels settlement expansion and Judaization in Jerusalem and is in breach of all obligations of the peace process, adding that the PA has put the reactivation of the Qalandiya airport into its future development plans. The occupation, however, has always placed obstacles to any development to the airport, he said. Khatib said the PA strongly opposed the new Israeli plan saying it would continue to resist these measures in diplomatic and international political circles.
