Tension high in the Noble Sanctuary in the Old City

Print PDF

Since the early hours of the morning, Jerusalem's Old City observes a tensed atmosphere following the declaration by settlers of Kiryat Araba settlement, in Hebron, to invade premises of al-Aqsa Mosque today.

On its part, Israeli police permitted groups of settlers to visit the area, while prohibiting the Palestinians under 40, from entering. However, for old people and women, Israeli police confiscated their ID cards at the gates of the Noble Sanctuary.

In the morning, the police arrested four Palestinians from inside vicinity of the mosque on charges of shouting at the settlers who entered the area under heavy escort of Israeli police.

On its part, President Abbas' office issued a statement condemning the continuous attempts by extremist Jews to desecrate al-Aqsa Mosque. It also called for the international community intervention to pressure the Israeli government to avoid instigating the already tensed situation in Jerusalem.
