Two Demolition Orders Postponed

Print PDF

The Jerusalem Municipal Court in West Jerusalem has extended the demolition order previously issued against Walid Jaber & Anad Obeidat.

Lawyer Farid Mahajneh from the Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER), who is following up the case files, said, 'The Israeli court agreed to postpone the demolition of Walid Jaber's house for one year, to impose a 7,000-shekel fine on Anad Obeidat's house and to postpone the demolition of his house for another half a year, on condition that they take the legal procedures necessary to obtain a building permit during this period.

Mr. Mahjneh noted that he provided the court with data related to the case files, forcing the court to issue its decision concerning the postponement of the demolition orders issued against the house-owners.

The Center's Director General, said, 'the Center has been able to follow up dozens of cases over the past few months and to issue similar court decisions temporarily preventing the demolition. Israel's escalation in regard to houses threatened with demolition makes the task of following up citizens' files an extremely difficult duty, given the instructions and decisions issued by the West Jerusalem Municipality leading to the expansion of the circle of house demolition.'

He pointed out that the Center has documented during the last month an escalation in house demolition in the suburbs of Jerusalem. The West Jerusalem Municipality issued instructions preventing the construction of high buildings inside the Old City of Jerusalem, given that it does not take measures against multi-storey buildings & high-rise buildings built by settlement societies. The building control teams have been raiding houses being restored or added by Palestinian Jerusalemites.
