Two Palestinian Houses Demolished

Print PDF

Early Wednesday morning, Israeli bulldozers demolished Mohammed Abed Al-Qader Kiswanis 110-square meter house in Tal Al-Foul in Beit Hanina, north of Occupied Jerusalem. The authorities cited illegal construction as the reason for the demolition. The house was home to five family members.

According to Mr. Kiswanis statement, I received a preliminary warning of the house demolition four months ago. Afterwards, I obtained a court decision to postpone the demolition pending a study of the case.

This morning I was surprised by the Israeli bulldozers surrounding the house and beginning to demolish it without prior notice. The demolition resulted in the displacement of the family members, he added.

Furthermore, Israeli bulldozers yesterday demolished Ahmad Jamil Shqeirats 140-square meter house in the Jabal Al-Mukabber neighborhood, south of Occupied Jerusalem. Again, the authorities cited illegal construction. However, the demolition appears to be related to construction of Israels Apartheid Wall; Israel intends to build part of the wall in this area. The demolished structure was home to nineteen family members.

Mohammed Shqeirats brother, Jamil Ahmad Shqeirat refuted Israeli authorities claims, saying, My brother had begun to carry out the necessary procedures to obtain a building permit. Last year, two fines were imposed on him. He paid the first one and is paying the second fine in the amount of 35,000 shekels.

With the demolition of these two houses, the number of Palestinian structures, including houses and cement walls, demolished by Israeli occupation authorities in Occupied Jerusalem since the beginning of January 2004 has risen to twenty.
