Family Reunification Permit Approved

Print PDF

After two years of delay, the Israeli Interior Ministry finally approved the family reunification application of Ali Amin Shqeirat, a Palestinian Jerusalemite resident of the Jabal Al-Mukabber neighborhood of Occupied East Jerusalem.

JCSER lawyer Ashraf Seif, who is following up the case, said, the Ministrys agreement to issue a family reunification permit came after a laborious series of letters and memos stretching across the past two years, in addition to pressure applied by the Israeli governments legal advisor who was kept informed of developments in the case and who was asked by the Center to exert pressure on the Ministry.

With the decision, Mr. Shqeirat was provided with a temporary Jerusalem ID card in order to enable him to live legally with his family.

In September 2003, an Israeli police unit and border guards raided Mr. Shqeirats house in Jabal Al-Mukabber; he was banished to Bethlehem, with the authorities claiming that he had been living illegally in Jerusalem.
