140,000-Shekel Arnona Tax Debt Cancelled

Print PDF

The Israeli Conciliation Court has rejected the case lodged by the West Jerusalem Municipality (WJM) against Khalil Al-Mashriqi from Occupied East Jerusalem, accusing him of evading payment of Arnona (municipal property) taxes in an amount equivalent to approximately $30,000 (US).

JCSERs lawyer, Mohammed Qadah, who followed up the case, said the court decision forces the WJM to dismiss the requests it imposed on Mr. Al-Mashriqi, and to pay all the expenses to the Court, in light of the fact that the Court - after examining the relevant documents - rejected the Municipalitys claims against Mr. Al-Mashriqi. The Court then admitted that the client had informed the Municipality in writing that he had left the property (a shop) on which the tax had been imposed.

Mr. Qadah noted that the WJM had demanded a tax payment of 140,000 shekels, which was then reduced to 62,000 shekels, and then further reduced to 14,000 shekels. According to the court decision, even this amount has been cancelled.
