Demolition of a Palestinian House Postponed for One Year & a Half, Health Insurance Restored

Print PDF

The Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER) was able to obtain a decision from the Jerusalem Municipal Court in West Jerusalem postponing the demolition of Atiyeh Rajais 220-sqaure-meter house for one year and a half, after the authorities cited illegal construction and the violation of building laws.

In accordance with the court decision, an 82,800-shekel fine was imposed on Mr. Rajai, payable in 150 equal monthly installments (an average of 552 shekels per payment), in addition to the license fees.

Furthermore, JCSER succeeded in restoring the health insurance of Firyal Kharbatli, and obtaining insurance for her husband, who has never been insured.

JCSER lawyer Dina Shibli, who followed up the case, said, Mrs. Kharbatli underwent chemotherapy treatment before the National Insurance Institute (NII) discontinued her the health insurance in October 2003, without prior notice.

Following a series of letters and memos confirming the illegality of the action, the NII responded and agreed to restore Mrs. Kharbatlis economic and social entitlements in full, added Ms. Shibli.
