The Israeli Authorities continued obstructions of the Palestinian Presidential Elections

Print PDF

JCSER condemned the harassment of Palestinian presidential candidates campaigns by the Israeli authorities. The obstructions of the candidates and Palestinian electoral movement in Occupied Jerusalem by Israeli authorities have also produced negative affects on the Palestinian democratization process.

The different shapes of Israeli direct interference in the Palestinian election negates the Israeli claim of non-interference policy in the mentioned elections. As the Israeli authorities claim that it is facilitating the candidates and citizens movements in Occupied Jerusalem.

JCSER has noted an incident where Presidential candidate Bassam Al-Salhi and his delegation, which included PLO executive committee member Mr. Hana Ameri, and JCSERs director encountered a team of Israeli secret police during their visit of Occupied Jerusalems Old City. The Israeli secret police then stopped and briefly detained Mr. Bassam Al-Salhi and his delegation at the Old Citys New Gate, which halted Mr. Al-Salhis visit as the secret police ordered him to return to Ramallah.

The Central Elections Commission and International observers call on the Israeli authorities to abide by international law and their governments pledge of non- interference in the Palestinian election process. JCSER urges Palestinian presidential candidates to continue with their campaigns in Occupied Jerusalem and calls on international and local monitoring committees to supervise the election process and document Israeli authorities violations.

JCSER warns against the 1996-election experience where Israel deployed thousands of its police, soldiers and secret police in Occupied Jerusalem to deter and scare Palestinian Jerusalemites from participating in the election process.
