JCSER warns of a humanitarian catastrophe for Palestinian prisoners

The Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER) has called on international human rights organizations, including Israeli human rights organizations, to intervene immediately to stop the maltreatment of Palestinian prisoners in Ashkelon prison, as well as the maltreatment of prisoners families by the prison authorities

The families of some detainees, who visited their sons in prison last Tuesday, were exposed to provocative and humiliating search by prison authorities.

The families were forced to take off their clothes and shoes before they were allowed to enter the prison.

The prison authority then refused to give the prisoners the food and winter clothes their families had brought them.

The Center regards these arbitrary measures as part of Israels programmed, systematic policy adopted against Palestinian prisoners, as witnessed at Ovra prison two days ago, where hundreds of prisoners have been attacked.

The Center warns of a humanitarian catastrophe if international humanitarian institutions do not exert pressure on the Israeli right-wing government, run by Ariel Sharon, to put an end to these repressive and abusive practices.
