Large-scale campaign against shops, houses & institutions in East Jerusalem

The Israeli police have today launched a large-scale campaign against shops, houses and institutions in the Holy Land, especially in Al-Hariri Street and Al-Musrarah Market, in search for workers from the West Bank. Some shop-owners were held by Israeli police.

The owner of Zalatimo Sweet Shop was held for several hours before being released. Two other men working in the shop were arrested for residing illegally in Jerusalem.

The Arab Sport Institute was also raided. Police destroyed windows and doors and damaged its contents. As-Sheikh Supermarket was also raided in search for workers from the West Bank, as was the New Regent Hotel, located in Az-Zahra Street.A number of shops in Al-Musrarah Market were raided, and tens of workers were arrested for entering Jerusalem without special permits.

The Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER) strongly condemns the way in which the shops were raided. Police raided houses at night, forcing owners to open their shops.

The Center also condemns the unjustified and deliberate damage the Israeli police caused to these shops.

The Center regards this campaign as a means of Israeli pressure against Palestinian Jerusalemites, in addition to the many other punitive measures already in effect in East Jerusalem.

The Center has never heard of such events taking place in West Jerusalem, given the fact that its residents are Jewish, confirming the racist, discriminatory policy of occupation against Arabs.
