Houses demolished in Silwan neighborhood of Occupied Jerusalem

Under the protection of large units of police and border guards, the Israeli army demolished one house and closed three more houses on Wednesday morning in the Ein al-Lozeh and al-Abassia areas in the Silwan neighborhood, south of Occupied Jerusalem.

The houses, which belonged to Mohammed Odeh, Wael Qasem, Ala al-Abassi, and Wisam al-Abassi, were forcibly evacuated the night before they were demolished.

The Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER) is investigating the demolition and closure of the houses, viewing the act as a grave violation of housing and residency rights. It regards the evacuation and demolition of the houses as part of Israels policy of collective punishment, legitimized by the Israeli Supreme Court, the highest judicial body in Israel. The Court granted permission for the demolitions to take place ten days ago.

This policy has proved to be unsuccessful, and an impediment to current efforts being made to defuse the tension and bring a halt to a two-year cycle of violence.

The Center calls on the Israeli authorities to stop their policy of collective punishment, and to stop killing innocent people and denying them their rights. It also calls on international human rights organizations to exert pressure on the Israeli government to stop its violent policy against Palestinian civilians.
