Jerusalem ID Card Granted to a Jerusalemite Citizen

After six years of deliberate delay, the Israeli Interior Ministry has agreed to grant Mahmoud Mohammed Issa, a resident of Jabal Al-Mukabber neighborhood of Occupied Jerusalem, a Jerusalem ID card, following the legal intervention of the Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER).

The Centers lawyer, Dina Shibli, who followed-up Mr. Issas case, said, The Interior Ministrys decision to grant a Jerusalem ID card to my client followed a series of correspondence and meetings between the Ministry and myself, from the time I received the case on 13 October 2002.

The Ministrys delay in granting my client a Jerusalem ID card was totally unjustified, given that he was able to prove his center of life is in Jerusalem.

Miss Shibli noted that, My client was supposed to receive a Jerusalem ID card at the age of 16. However, the Interior Ministry refused to grant him an ID card, claming that he lives outside the municipal boundaries of Jerusalem.

I sent a letter to the Ministry on 18 December 2002, attaching all the documents and papers that prove my clients center of life is in Jerusalem. Forty days later, on 27 January, 2003, the Center received a letter from the Ministry, giving its approval to issue a Jerusalem ID card to Mahmoud Issa, which was indeed issued on 5 February, 2003.
