JCSER Condemns Closure of Palestinian Homes & Regards it as Collective Punishment

Print PDF

The Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Center (JCSER) calls on Israel to stop its policy of collective punishment against Palestinian Jerusalemites, expressing its strong condemnation for the closure of a two-storey building in Jabal Al-Mukabber, southern Jerusalem. The house, owned by Ala Abu Dheim, was home to 25 family members.

JCSERs Director General,, said, The closure of two floors, home to this large number of family members, under the pretext that one of the family members committed an act jeopardizing security, is one form of collective punishment. The Israeli Supreme Court, the highest judicial body in Israel, gave the green light to the Executive Power to close the house, without taking into consideration the humanitarian dimensions of the closure and its damaging consequences on the family members.

He confirmed that the Supreme Courts decision was issued for political motives, thus legitimizing the closure of the house and providing it a legal character. This is exactly what it did when it legitimized torture methods in Israeli prisons, by allowing Israeli interrogators to practice a moderate pressure against Palestinian prisoners & detainees. Additionally, other decisions were issued by the Israeli Supreme Court, related to the demolition of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem, and its recent approval of the completion of the Apartheid Wall around Shufat refugee camp, Dahiet As-Salam & Ras Khamis.

He pointed out that the closure, which concurred with Israeli aggression Gaza Strip, proves that the Israeli government deals with the Palestinian people in the same logic. The demolition of Palestinian Jerusalemites homes is the same as the bombing and shelling of Gazan homes, because the result is the same.

According to JCSERs data, the closure of Abu Dheims house is the first since the beginning of 2009, given that demolition orders have been approved by the Supreme Court against the suicide bombers who carried out the recent bombings in West Jerusalem

Since the beginning of 2009, more than 20 demolition orders have been issued against Palestinian Jerusalemites. This means that Palestinian Jerusalemites are facing a new wave of large-scale demolitions that will be carried out by the Jerusalem Municipality during the coming short period under the pretext of illegal construction.
