JCSER Warns of New Demolitions of Palestinian Houses in East Jerusalem Demolition Orders Handed to Over 20 Palestinian House-Owners

JCSERs Research & Documentation Unit warned of new demolitions of dozens of Palestinian houses in East Jerusalem in the coming few weeks.

The report relied on municipal data stating that some 20 Palestinian houses in East Jerusalem are threatened with immediate demolition, three of which have been demolished two days ago: two houses home to over 50 family members in Silwan & Beit Hanina, and another home under construction.

The report noted that the demolition of three houses in the first month of the year, in addition to the closure of another house, which belongs to Ala Abu Dheim, the suicide bomber of the Jewish synagogue (Yeshiva) in West Jerusalem last year, indicates that the new Mayor is adopting the same policy of the previous administration, headed by Uri Lupolianski.

The report noted that Jerusalems new Mayor, Nir Barakat, stated, during the election campaign, his intention of fighting what he described as the illegal construction in East Jerusalem.

The report expected that the Jerusalem Municipality will start tomorrow and during the coming few days demolishing Palestinian houses against which demolition orders have been issued & signed by the Jerusalem Mayor.

On the other hand, the Centers legal clinic called on Palestinian Jerusalemites who have been given demolition orders to approach the Center for legal assistance provided by its legal staff. The clinic confirmed, in a statement, that the legal staff is ready to receive cases and complaints submitted by citizens with regard to demolition orders, building violations, as well as other human rights violations, including residents rights to residency & housing.
