Jerusalem Municipality Demolished 30 Palestinian Houses since January 2009

Print PDF

A recent report issued by JCSERs Research & Documentation Unit noted 30 Palestinian houses have been demolished in Occupied East Jerusalem by the Jerusalem Municipality since January 2009. The report noted that the demolitions carried out in the neighbors surrounding the Old City of Jerusalem and on the hills of Jewish settlements adjacent to the Old City.

Around 200,000 people, mostly women and children, have directly been affected by the demolition of their houses. The demolition has had social, psychological and behavioral impacts on the families caused by the loss of their own houses and therefore were forced to live in tents and houses of metal sheets.

With regard to demolition orders, the months of January and February 2009 have reported the highest number of demolition orders given to Palestinian Jerusalemites for years. The largest demolition process was carried out in 2000 where 17 Palestinian houses were demolished in Shufat Refugee Camp, northern Jerusalem. The total destruction of Al-Magharbeh and Al-Sharaf neighborhoods in the Old City was the largest demolition campaign.

Since January 2009, over 200 demolition orders have been issued, including 88 houses in Silwan, with a total population of 1,500, and 55 houses in Ras Khamis in Shufat Refugee Camp, with a total population of over 500, and around 35 Bedouin houses across Jerusalem-Jericho road, and 66 apartments in Al-Issawiyya whose house-owners received demolition orders during the last two months of 2008.

On the other hand, there has been settlement intensification in the Old City and Silwan where new buildings are being added to the existing settlement nucleuses and in the heart of the Jewish Neighborhood. More than 2,000 settlement units will be added in Bet Ort, Pisgat Zeev, Nevi Yacoub, Maale Adumim and Jabal Abu Ghneim.

With the facilities granted in regard to settlement, the Unit noted that further restrictions will be imposed on the Palestinian construction in Occupied East Jerusalem. Palestinian Jerusalemites will not be granted building licenses, penalties imposed on them will be doubled, including imposition of high fines in the amount of tens of thousands of shekels and actual imprisonment of those who fail to pay fines.

The report concluded that what is being carried out by the Jerusalem Municipality against Palestinian Jerusalemites indicates a new stage, leading to the demolition of more than 6,000 unlicensed houses, increasing the number of houses to 20,000.
