JCSER condemns the new amendment to the Israeli Citizenship Law

Print PDF

The Israeli government adopted on October 10, 2010 a new amendment to the Citizenship Law which would require Palestinians and other non-Jews seeking citizenship through the family reunification process to swear allegiance to Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. The approval of the amendment was adopted by 22 votes of the extremist right ministers from the Likud, Shas and Yisrael Beiteinu parties. Eight ministers abstained from voting including 5 from the Labor Party and the threeLikud ministers: Benny Begin, Dan Meridor and Michael Eitan.

Jerusalem Center for Social and Economic Rights blatantly condemns this new law which is expected to pass in the Israeli Knesset that is dominated by the right wing parties, since it boosts the discrimination against the Arab minorities and Palestinians who are its main targets.

Moreover, approving the new bill in conjunction with the current international efforts by members of the international community to resume the peace process, has the lonely message that the government of occupation still not mature for paying the prices of peace that include the return of the Palestinian refugees to their homeland in according to the UNSC 194.

The loyalty oath will also work on wiping out the national and political identity of Palestinians and Arabs living in Israel and under the Israeli occupation rule.

It also comes within the context of the old Israeli policies which aim to have the maximum area of the land Palestine with the least number of Arab Palestinians.

The rights of Palestinians in historic Palestine, to freedom of thought and political expression are enshrined in international human rights law such as the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Persons belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities.

Their rights to own identity and protection from the imposition of the views of the majority and occupation on them are internationally recognized.

In conclusion, the Jerusalem Center of Social and Economic Rights calls on the Israeli government to rescind its decision to adopt this notorious law which jeopardizes the peace process and works instead, on adopting measures to build confidence with the Palestinian neighbors.

On its part the international community is called to honor its duties to guarantee the respect of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions on particular.
