Issawiyeh: Sufferings and siege

Mahmoud Muhammad Obeid, Chief of Issawiyeh town (Mukhtar), reported that the Israeli campaign against the town, which began on November 11, included the erection of cemented block barrier at its main entrance that leads to the French Hill. Meanwhile, there is a permanent presence by teams of National Insurance and Israeli police who inspect the residents ID cards and their cars. As part of the campaign, the police used revoked the licenses of several cars on allegation that they lacked for traffic safety standards.

According to Obeid, "One of the police officers reported that the aim of the Israeli campaign was to achieve security in Issawiyeh. Also, the officer expressed his will to wander in the town in a similar way as he does in West Jerusalem."

Another resident of the town, Bashar Muhaisen said, "The police presence at the only town entrance to Jerusalem creates a state of horror and dread among the citizens." The soldiers use dogs in searching the residents' cars, in addition of arresting two kids on the early morning of November 11 who were identified as Ali Muhaisen and Ala' Mustafa, 14.

However, Maher Muhaisen told the Jerusalem Center for Social and Economic Rights, JCSER, that on the same date, his farm which consisted of three rooms constructed of bricks and two constructed of iron sheets. The farm was built on an entire area of 100 sq. meters. The entire 2-dumums of land that locates near Ma'ale Adumim St. was also razed. "One day before the incident, employees of the Israeli Jerusalem municipality arrived to give us an ultimatum of 24 hours to demolish the farm," he said.

He added, "The land was planted with citrus trees which were all uprooted." He added, the farm was built before 15 years. Muhaisen who is the breadwinner of 7 persons, works in Hadassah Hospital.
