Palestinian Rights in Jerusalem Campaign Launched

Print PDF

Representatives of Palestinian, Israeli and international non-governmental human rights organizations announced the launching of "Palestinian Rights in Jerusalem" campaign, during a meeting held at the Notre Dame Hotel in East Jerusalem on 09 August 2008. During the meeting, participants discussed Israeli practices and measures against Palestinian Jerusalemites, especially Israel's policy of ID card confiscation.

The campaign aims to move to confront Israel's policy of ID cards confiscation from Palestinian Jerusalemites and to follow up on the issue, through launching a systematic and organized campaign. The campaign includes raising legal awareness among Palestinian Jerusalemites of their rights, as guaranteed by international law. The latter stipulates the importance of providing protection by the occupying state, Israel in this case, to citizens living under occupation, as well as the importance of moving locally, regionally and internationally to form an interaction on this issue and to exert pressure on the Israeli authorities to stop its confiscation of ID cards from Palestinian Jerusalemites.

Moreover, the campaign seeks to focus on the legal aspect, ending up by submitting a legal case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) afterwards to stop Israel's illegal policy of ID card confiscation, to raise legal awareness among Palestinian Jerusalemites, and to encourage Palestinian Jerusalemites affected by this policy to provide information about their cases.

Participants discussed in detail the legal aspects to confront Israel's policy of ID card confiscation, either individual's desire to appeal against ID cards confiscation through Israeli jurisdiction, or on a group level through resorting to international legal courts.

Participants also discussed the importance of having a Palestinian address for the affected people of the Israeli policy. They called on Palestinian Jerusalemites whose ID cards have been confiscated to approach Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER) and to provide information about their cases either via mail or e-mail, with the aim of having a database for the campaign on the number and names of Palestinian Jerusalemites whose ID cards have been confiscated by the Israeli occupation authorities.

The meeting was followed by another meeting held in March 2008 to discuss the Israeli policy, which increased its pace recently. It is a political, social and national issue that jeopardizes the life of many citizens and their families. An immediate action on all levels needs to be taken in this regard.
