JCSER's Legal Unit: Random Census Conducted for Jerusalemites in Some Neighborhoods is a Process of Training Israeli Teams

Print PDF

A recent report prepared by JCSER's legal unit revealed that the random census being conducted by Israeli teams in Palestinian neighborhoods in East Jerusalem over the past few weeks is a training carried out by the Israeli Interior Ministry for its teams who are assigned the duty to conduct the census. The census hasn't officially started yet.

The purpose of this training is to discover some problems and obstacles that may face these teams in the future, and try to overcome and avoid them. It also aims to qualify the census teams to do their job properly.

The report warned of exaggerating what was carried out by these teams, thus creating an unjustified state of confusion and chaos among Palestinian citizens. The report, however, urged Palestinian Jerusalemites to prove their daily and permanent presence in their place of residence on the eve of the imminent census campaign.

On the other, the report raised questions about another campaign conducted by Israeli teams in neighborhoods outside the municipal boundaries of Jerusalem under the pretext of conducting the census in question. Israeli teams have recently worked in some cities near Jerusalem, such as Al-Bireh, Ramallah & Bethlehem under the protection of large army units. They raided houses of Palestinian Jerusalemites and collected detailed information about the residents of these houses.

The report confirmed that the work of these teams may have future hazards threatening the residency of these families in Jerusalem, and put question marks about the continued payment of the social and economic entitlements to these families.

JCSER's Director General, warned that these teams are taking advantage of the Israeli announcement for the census in a bid to deny more Palestinian Jerusalemites of their residency rights, as well as collecting information about Jerusalemites whom the Jerusalem Municipality is accusing them of committing building violations or owing the Israeli tax departments, thus making it easier to reach them.

He confirmed that the legal unit is following up what is being done by these teams. He called on Palestinian citizens who are being exposed to the practices of these teams to approach the Center. Legal procedures are being discussed and studied to preserve and protect the rights of Palestinian Jerusalemites.
