Large units of Israeli police broke into Al-Zahra Mosque in Jerusalem yesterday Monday, 06 October 2008, and investigated worshippers as they left the mosque, examined their ID cards and handed many of them notifications asking them to refer to the Israeli Intelligence Services at a later time.

On his part, Sheikh Dr. Ekrima Sabri, Head of the Higher Islamic Council and Mufti of Jerusalem & Palestine described the Intelligence Services behaviors as provocative, constituting a grave violation of citizens basic human rights, including the right to freedom of worship, and freedom of movement.

Dr. Sabri refused Israel's procedures and measures that lead to tension in the Holy City in particular.

JCSERs Director General, strongly condemned Israels breaking into the mosque which is a place of worship, highlighting the fact that breaking into worship places is a violation of all religious rights that guarantee freedom of worship in accordance with status quo. Governments shall respect religious places where people go to perform of acts of religious praise, honor or devotion, and therefore, shall be respected.
