JCSER Calls On UNESCO to Protect Waqf Properties in Jerusalem

Print PDF

The Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER) described the demolition of the Higher Islamic Council's building in West Jerusalem by Israeli occupation authorities as a 'dangerous development', thus threatening the demolition of dozens of buildings and historic properties, including deserted and closed mosques built throughout West Jerusalem.

JCSER confirmed that the Higher Islamic Council is considered to be a historic landmark of Jerusalem with its symbolic significance, which reflected the Arab & Islamic history of Jerusalem. The demolition of the Higher Islamic Council for the construction of Jewish housing units means the destruction of these historic symbols and the obliteration of the Holy City's landmarks.

The Center called on the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to intervene immediately to save properties located in West Jerusalem, which the Israelis have turned into the so-called 'Custodian of Absentee Property', who over the years turned the ownership of these properties into settlement societies or Jewish investment parties.

The Center brought to mind the large-scale demolition campaigns against dozens of buildings built close to the Islamic Compound and the construction of a Jewish village, known as 'Daoud Village'.

The Center's Director General, noted that Arab & Islamic properties located either in West Jerusalem or inside the Old City of Jerusalem requires immediate intervention by the UNESCO to help preserve the humanitarian and cultural heritage of the Holy City, and to stop the obliteration and distortion of the historic landmarks of the city of Jerusalem.
