49 Palestinian Houses Demolished in Occupied East Jerusalem since January 2007

Since the beginning of January 2007, the West Jerusalem Municipality (WJM) has demolished 49 Palestinian houses in different parts of Occupied East Jerusalem.

The number of Palestinian houses demolished during 2007 is twice the number of houses demolished during the same period of last year 2006. By the end of December 2006, a total of 76 houses, structures & cement walls have been demolished by Israeli occupation.

The Jerusalem Center for Social & Economic Rights (JCSER) accused the WJM of escalating demolition measures in East Jerusalem over the past few months, to include demolition of ancient historic buildings in West Jerusalem, such as the Higher Islamic Council's building, and at the same time, it continues to demolish sites in Bab Al-Magharbeh area.

The Center's Director General, has warned of large-scale demolitions in Dahiet As-Salam located in 'Anata, northeast Jerusalem, in the wake of the illegal demolition orders sent to dozens of Jerusalemite families whose houses are threatened with demolition.

He called on the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to intervene immediately to prevent imminent demolitions of the houses, with a total of 1,000 family members.
